Island Tour – South
This excursion gives you the chance to get a feel for the essence of Tenerife in just one day. Once you’ve been picked up, you’ll leave the hotel district behind and head for the city of Candelaria. There you can visit its basilica, which houses the Virgin of Candelaria (or the ‘Black Madonna’), the patron saint of the Canary Islands. Marvel at the imposing bronze statues commemorating the ancient menceyes (Guanche kings) of Tenerife, which are a national monument. We’ll continue on to La Laguna, the first city founded in Tenerife after its conquest. This historic jewel was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. Here we’ll walk through its picturesque streets steeped in history and culture. The excursion continues on to the northern end of the island, where you’ll go on a walking tour of the historic-artistic site of the town of Orotava. Its streets full of history and beauty will take you to Casa de Los Balcones, one of the most iconic buildings in Orotava and the embroidery and fretwork centre for traditional Canarian costumes. We’ll continue with a visit to Garachico, included in the list of “MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES IN SPAIN” in 2021. This village was partially destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1706 and was later rebuilt. Today, it has a rich architectural heritage from the 16th and 17th centuries that is very well-preserved, which is why its historic quarter was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1994.
